Novice Quarter Final vs Scart

posted 23 Apr 2012, 07:45 by Shane O'Connell

Played in a very blustery Willie Walsh Park in Knocknagoshel, Scartaglen opened the scoring with a point from play by Tim Coakley in the 1st minute. His brother Mike added another point in the 6th minute before Knocknagoshel responded with two pointed frees from James and Edmond Walsh in the 7th & 9th minutes. Scartaglen were awarded a penalty in the 14th minute but Danny Walsh dived low to his left for a fine save. A James Walsh pointed free and a Kieran Long point from play for Knocknagoshel was countered by a pointed free from Daniel Murphy of Scartaglen in the 26th minute. Edmond Walsh replied immediately with a point for Knocknagoshel and two minutes later, after a good build up, Shane O’Connell goaled for Knocknagoshel to leave them ahead at half time on a score line of 1-05 to 0-03.

Scartaglen’s Denis Lenihan and Knocknagoshel’s James Walsh exchanged frees at the start of the second half before Daniel Murphy popped over two points from frees for Scartaglen in the 8th and 12th minute. Scartaglen were now enjoying a purple patch and only a brilliant save by Danny Walsh in the Knocknagoshel goal denied Padraig Reidy a goal. Scartaglen scored the last three points of the second half in the 16th, 21st & 26th minutes courtesy of Pa Rahilly, Denis Lenihan (free) & Philip O’Sullivan to leave the sides level at full time on a score line of Knocknagoshel 1-06, Scartaglen 0-09.

The only score in the first half of extra time came when Denis Lenihan converted a free for Scartaglen in the 8th minute. The second half of extra time was equally as tight with both sides giving their all in a compelling encounter. Denis Lenihan converted another free for Scartaglen in the 3rd minute but this was cancelled out by a James Walsh point from a Knocknagoshel free in the 4th minute. Scartaglen now led by a solitary point and, despite intense pressure for the remainder of the half, Knocknagoshel could not force an equalizer. The final score was Scartaglen 0-11, Knocknagoshel 1-07. Referee for the match was Paul Hayes of Kerins O’Rahillys. Our seniors displayed great levels of fitness throughout and can take heart from their display.

We wish Padraig Reidy a speedy recovery from his ankle injury.
